1,000 Greatest Drivers: Dick Hutcherson
Arguably the most egregious NASCAR HoF snub at this point.
This was easier to write than the Graham Hill column because I like writing about underrated drivers more than overrated ones. Obviously, Hill was still a better driver than Hutcherson but it’s more fun to write about undervalued drivers. Not only does Hutcherson have the 10th-best winning percentage in NASCAR Cup history, he also won back-to-back titles as a crew chief for David Pearson immediately after his Cup Series retirement and then became one of the best NASCAR chassis designers for decades after that, yet I see no one ever hyping him much and he was snubbed from both the 50 and 75 Greatest Drivers lists when some clearly worse drivers made them.
I’ve decided to stop the daily columns after December 9 when I write about Max Verstappen after the end of the F1 season. I will then spend the remaining 22 days of the month writing my top 200 drivers list, which I will hopefully release by the end of the year. I will post the individual columns of my top 200 lists initially as subscriber-only content so you’ll still get paid content here and you know how lengthy my list columns tend to be. Probably after my columns have been available as subscriber-only content for a week, I will then re-post them publicly on Racermetrics. I was thinking about taking the entire month off but I had intended to write about Max (or whoever won the title if on the off chance he didn’t, which I never thought he wouldn’t) after the end of the season and that makes a fairly obvious stopping point. I also had columns scheduled for Bobby Allison and Colin McRae in the early portion of this month and since Allison just died and I just wrote about McRae’s contemporary Richard Burns who is inextricably linked with him, it makes sense to write those now as well.
Here is the schedule for December posts:
December 1 - Andrea Bertolini
December 2 - Andy Rouse
December 3 - Bobby Allison
December 4 - Felice Nazzaro
December 5 - Jim Paschal
December 6 - Colin McRae
December 7 - Robert Kubica
December 8 - Raffaele Pinto
December 9 - Max Verstappen
