I’ve mentioned quite a few times that I have a ridiculously massive master driver list, consisting of almost any driver who did anything ever. There are still a lot of series I haven’t finished archiving yet that I would like to, but the 5.7 MB raw text file currently has over 210,000 rows of data with 35,095 drivers, their home country, birth and death dates, their rating(s) in any of my model(s), a line-by-line summary of all their accomplishments sorted by year, and for selected drivers, a list of all their season grades and the total number of points they have scored for 1,000 greatest driver ranking purposes (I eventually intend to do this for all drivers, but I’m going to wait until I have all the season grades done, and I’m nowhere near that yet).
As I’ve also mentioned, for each major league series, I list all the top ten points finishers and winners, while I list the top five points finishers and winners for all the top-tier minor leagues (such as F2, F3, British F3, O’Reilly, Craftsman Trucks, ARCA/ARCA East/ARCA West, ASA, ARTGO, NASCAR Modifieds, World of Outlaws, High Limit, USAC Silver Crown/Sprint/Midget, Porsche Carrera Cup, or anything else at that general level). For the lower-level minor league series that have no real prestige, I only list champions and drivers with 5+ wins in a season. This is what has enabled me to produce an exhaustive list that pretty much includes everything while also keeping it fairly manageable in size to provide a quick summary of each driver’s career. For example, since I’m doing him, here’s Eric van de Poele’s:
It’s really effective in terms of giving me a quick and dirty summary of each driver’s accomplishments, and it is my secret weapon for most of my 1,000 greatest drivers entries. Now, this really starts to break down when it comes to drivers who didn’t really compete in series, such as legendary grassroots drivers who competed at local tracks in poorly-organized outlaw races (like the Dick Gaines of the world), but the percentage of drivers who will eventually make the list that this affects is, I think, relatively small (probably fewer than 5%). At the end of the file, I have over 200 series I intend to cover that I haven’t included yet. The most significant of these are domestic sports car championships and some early sports car races that didn’t count for championships, but it will be impossible for me not to have gaps, even as massive as this file is.
Over the past few years, I’ve also started recording the date of the last race on every series schedule, so as soon as a season championship ends, I’ve extracted all the data from it. I thought that before I talk about my mom’s transition tomorrow and move on to my next project for the intros in October, I should share a list of all the series I’m covering and all the data I have for them (this is indeed gargantuan and I think almost exhaustive). I obtained most of this information from The Third Turn, but even they’re not as up to date as I am sometimes.

Wyffels Hybrids RaceSaver Sprint Car SeriesI admit that in addition to preparing for Mom’s return, doing my paid work, and finishing entering all the VLN winners onto the aforementioned master driver list, updating this list of series to determine when each series ended, and entering the 2026 data on my master driver list after each season ended has been one of my biggest time sinks, and it partially explains why I didn’t write as many entries as I wanted to. But you can probably also see why I find this essential to writing the best possible entries for each driver.
ERIC VAN DE POELE…………..BELGIUM

Best drive: 1987 24 Hours of Spa
The winningest driver at the 24 Hours of Spa, van de Poele, who was nicknamed Tintin due to sharing a nationality and a certain resemblance to the iconic cartoon character, won the Belgian and Benelux Formula Ford titles before pivoting to touring cars. He became a star in 1987 when he won the German DTM touring car championship as a rookie, but he curiously never won a race in the series. The Wunstorf DTM race was held on the same weekend as the 24 Hours of Spa and van de Poele shuttled back and forth, timing his Spa stints around the DTM race so he could compete in both. Improbably, van de Poele not only won at Spa but won the pole and finished third at Wunstorf.
He switched his focus back to single-seaters and finished second in the 1990 Formula 3000 championship to Érik Comas, winning three races including the Pau Grand Prix. In 1991, he debuted in F1 with the backmarker Modena Lamborghini team, where he only qualified once and was generally outmatched by teammate Nicola Larini, but he was running fifth in his sole start at Imola until a fuel pump failure on the last lap. Van de Poele’s stint for the once-vaunted Brabham team in its final season was equally disappointing as he again qualified only once, but he outqualified future World Champion Damon Hill 5-2. After three starts with the Fondmetal team, which likewise shut down, he was unable to find another F1 ride.
Van de Poele spent one year as a Tyrrell test driver and a half-season in the British Touring Car Championship before bouncing back in 1995 by winning four races in the Spanish touring car championship CET and the 12 Hours of Sebring. After a very similar 1996 when he won two CET races and repeated at Sebring, he fully committed to sports cars, earning three IMSA/American Le Mans Series wins including the inaugural Petit Le Mans, back-to-back Le Mans class wins, and four more 24 Hours of Spa wins in 1998, 2005, 2006, and 2008, giving him a record five. Outside of racing, he became CEO of Tech/NC Explore, a fuel-saving technology business.
While van de Poele’s open wheel career is certainly underrated as he deserved better than driving for three uncompetitive F1 teams in their final seasons, I find the rest of his career slightly overrated. His only major league championship came in his winless DTM campaign, and while he won many marquee sports car races, he wasn’t much of a factor for season championships in sports cars or touring cars. I acknowledge that marquee sports car wins are more important than championships, but it’s telling that his last three Spa wins came as a part-time driver while his full-time FIA GT teammates Michael Bartels, Andrea Bertolini, and Timo Scheider were arguably bigger contributors. Even if his sports car career may be overhyped, van de Poele certainly belongs on the list for being the winningest driver in a marquee race.
