My personal belief is that Paschal is ignored because he had the misfortune to die before the Hall opened. Had he hung around longer, he'd have gotten the Owens/McGriff/Donnie Allison treatment. But since he didn't, and doesn't have a too big to ignore legacy like Tim Flock or Bobby Isaac, he could be safely ignored. His relatively low win percentage compared to his peers was probably why he missed the original top 50.
Yeah, I see what you're saying. For a while, it seemed like they were going to strictly follow the 50 Greatest Drivers list and then the Donnie Allison induction sort of threw a monkey wrench into that. Owens was obviously deserving anyway, but more as a car owner than engineer as a driver. I did think Jim Paschal deserved to be on the original list of 50 more than some of the people who were: Cotton Owens/Glen Wood (driving careers shouldn't have been there and they were obviously listed for their overall accomplishments in the sport - why not Dick Hutcherson or Ralph Moody then, but probably none of them should've been on?), Jerry Cook (far fewer wins than is claimed, and he wasn't much of a rival to Richie Evans at all), Hershel McGriff (too many long hiatuses that ended up preventing him from building the legacy he was probably capable of; shouldn't have been on if you don't have Ray Elder), Marvin Panch, honestly A.J. Foyt... But also, I suppose you could argue Hutcherson and Fonty Flock and maybe even Frankie Schneider were bigger snubs... I used to say Ralph Earnhardt until I did my research and proved that he actually did have hundreds of wins and it wasn't just a favor to Dale like I stupidly originally thought.
