1,000 Greatest Drivers: Robert Benoist
He's arguably better known as a war hero than a driver.
From what I have read, Benoist’s body was discovered after some time had passed and it’s unclear what day he was killed as English Wikipedia has his date of death on September 11 while French Wikipedia says September 12 and Motorsports Memorial says September 14. I’m going to go with the last one since that is the date that most of the British archivists tracking war deaths decided upon, so that’s why I decided to write about him today. Although Benoist was clearly a great driver and I definitely rate him the best driver of 1927, it seems like his driving career was somewhat of a lark to him and something he was relatively indifferent to compared to a lot of his contemporaries, while he took his military service much more seriously, so I understand why he seems to be better known as a war hero than a driver, but his driving career is certainly also worthy of a lot of praise.
