1,000 Greatest Drivers: Sascha Maassen
Does anyone know if there are any lap times available from his era?
Determining which driver did more of the work on a powerhouse sports car team is extremely difficult because there are some such teams that seem to be evenly matched (like Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas) and others that are clearly not (Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas). Part of the reason I established my touring car model was to help me obtain context for which driver on various sports car teams was doing the work, and I guess that’s a major reason why I decided to call Porsche Supercup a touring car series even though I suspect most other people wouldn’t. However, that didn’t help me much here because Lucas Luhr unlike Maassen spent very little time in touring cars and only had six teammate comparisons. Maassen actually has the higher rating in my touring car model, but from my understanding, Luhr was better and I’m going to rate him higher mainly because he had many major accomplishments without Maassen and Maassen had relatively few without Luhr. However, this is one discipline where I admit I have to do a lot of guesswork for the drivers who peaked before the 2010s when I was able to obtain lap times for various sports car series.
