1,000 Greatest Drivers: Will Power
At least I had enough willpower to catch up tonight.
About the only good thing that happened lately I guess is that I entered and won a Twitter contest to receive ex-ESPN IndyCar scribe John Oreovicz’s book on the IndyCar split. Not like I need to bring any more things into the house obviously, but this is a book I thought about buying myself at some point and I just thought, “What the hell?” At least it’ll give me something to read on the bus rides to and from visiting Mom at Van Duyn once I’m healthy enough to do so again, since I’m almost finished with the book I’m currently reading (Opposable Thumbs, a history of Siskel & Ebert by Matt Singer; I was a big Roger Ebert fan and he was an important influence on my writing). I guess similarly to how I wanted to cover a string of past Daytona 500 winners in the run up to the Daytona 500, I decided I wanted to cover a string of IndyCar stars in the run up to the IndyCar season opener, but admittedly, Power and Antron Brown were the only legends born on March 1 so it was a pretty easy choice since I do think I’m much better equipped to write about modern IndyCar drivers than NHRA drivers and it is on the eve of the St. Pete season opener. Although Power will get really mad at me if he reads this, I do think his salad days are pretty much through and he has very, very few wins left and rumor has it he may be on the Penske hotseat even, but he did win three races last year and that surprised me, so maybe I’m wrong. It is pretty telling to me though that he qualified 13th at St. Pete, a track where he has previously won eight poles…
